I think it might have to do with being a black trash and being rape by a white man. I mean, take a look at the Oscar winners. They're usually "sad" stories (Million Dollar Baby, the rape in that Jody Foster one--what was that again?)
Excepting Shakespeare in Love which was actually a romantic non-happy ending comedy....well, non-happy said it all.
